Rhinoplasty, often known as nose surgery or a nose job, can improve the shape, size or symmetry of your nose to achieve a more attractive aesthetic balance between your facial features. Rhinoplasty can also be performed to alleviate breathing difficulties caused by structural abnormalities in the nose or to correct unsatisfactory results from a prior nose surgery. When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty can dramatically improve the appearance of the nose, enhance facial harmony and restore confidence with natural-looking results.
What benefits can nose surgery provide?
Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently requested cosmetic surgical procedures in the world. By reshaping the bone, cartilage and skin that make up the nose, a plastic surgeon can:
- Increase or decrease nose size or width in relation to other facial features
- Smooth a prominent bump or depression on the nose bridge
- Straighten a crooked nose
- Refine a nasal tip that is drooping, upturned, bulbous or protruding
- Correct nostrils that are large, wide or upturned
- Restore symmetry or alignment following injury
- Improve airflow by straightening a deviated septum
What happens during nose surgery?
Rhinoplasty is a highly customized procedure that may be performed using an open or closed technique. The appropriate option for your specific procedure will depend on your concerns, your physical characteristics and your desired outcomes. Nose surgery falls into two primary categories:
During open rhinoplasty, an incision is made under the nasal tip across the narrow band of tissue that separates the nostrils. The skin is gently lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage, which can then be reduced, augmented or reshaped as needed to create a more aesthetically pleasing and proportionate structure. The tissues are redraped over the improved framework and the incisions are closed to complete the procedure. Open rhinoplasty offers the surgeon maximum visibility and direct access to the nasal structures, which can make it a more suitable approach for patients desiring extensive transformation.
During closed rhinoplasty, adjustments are performed through incisions made inside the nostrils. This technique eliminates visible scarring and may reduce postoperative swelling and recovery time. However, it may not be effective for patients seeking extensive surgical improvement. Closed rhinoplasty is most commonly recommended for patients who require only moderate adjustments to achieve their aesthetic goals.
Patients who experience impeded airflow as a result of a deviated septum can undergo a procedure called septorhinoplasty that addresses the appearance and the functional capabilities of the nose simultaneously. During septorhinoplasty, the surgeon makes cosmetic improvements and opens obstructed nasal passages by straightening the septum.
What can I expect during recovery?
Splints and packing may be used to provide support for your newly shaped nose and protect it from contact during the first phase of healing. Bruising and swelling will be present during this time and can persist for several weeks. Prescribed medication can help alleviate the discomfort if needed. Most patients are ready to return to work or school one to two weeks after surgery. Strenuous activities, particularly those that put your nose at risk of contact, may need to be avoided longer.
While initial swelling will subside within a few weeks, minor swelling may come and go for up to a year following your rhinoplasty. Your new nasal contour may continue to refine gradually over this period. The final results of your surgery will be revealed once the swelling has fully dissipated and the structures of your nose have settled into their improved shape.
What results can nose surgery achieve?
Rhinoplasty is a rewarding procedure that can have a significant impact on your confidence and self-image. Your results may include:
- Improved shape, size, projection and/or symmetry of the nose
- Improved proportions and balance between facial features
- Correction of genetic abnormalities or injuries
- Repositioned septum to improve airflow
- Revised results of an unsatisfactory rhinoplasty performed previously
The results of rhinoplasty are long-lasting, although the cartilage and tissues of your nose may shift over time due to the natural process of aging.
What procedures complement nose surgery?
Rhinoplasty is regularly performed in conjunction with surgery to improve the size, shape or definition of the chin. The nose and chin are two of the most prominent features of the facial profile, and their relationship plays an essential role in determining an aesthetically proportionate face. Adjusting the nose and chin together can be the most effective way to achieve facial harmony and natural-looking results.
Is nose surgery covered by insurance?
Insurance companies generally do not cover procedures that are performed purely for cosmetic reasons. As such, surgery intended to improve the appearance of the nose only will likely not be covered by your insurance carrier. A septorhinoplasty may qualify for partial or complete insurance coverage if the procedure is deemed “medically necessary” for improving nasal function. Every health plan is different. Contact your insurance carrier to determine your eligibility.
Is nose surgery right for me?
Rhinoplasty is popular with men and women of all ages. If you are self-conscious about the appearance of your nose, unhappy with the results of a prior nose procedure or struggling with complications from a deviated septum, rhinoplasty may be right for you. A good candidate for nose surgery is physically healthy, does not smoke and is seeking improvement, not perfection. Candidates must be old enough for facial growth to be complete (mid to late teens), as continued growth after surgery can compromise the results. Younger patients must also demonstrate understanding of the surgical process and the emotional maturity needed for a successful procedure.
