BUTTOCK IMPLANTS

The size, shape and firmness of the buttocks are important factors in a well-proportioned physique, but many struggle to boost a flat or drooping derrière with exercise alone. Buttock augmentation, or gluteal augmentation, improves the size, shape and projection of the buttocks using silicone implants.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BUTTOCK IMPLANTS?

You may wish to consider buttock augmentation with implants if:

  • You feel your buttocks are too flat, poorly shaped or lack firmness

  • Your buttocks have lost volume due to weight loss or aging

  • Your buttocks are not proportionate with your body frame

  • Your buttocks are asymmetrical

  • You are unhappy with the way clothing fits your figure

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUTTOCK IMPLANTS AND A BRAZILIAN BUTT LIFT?

Buttock augmentation with implants and Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery are both designed to produce larger, more shapely buttocks and hips. However, the method of enhancement differs significantly between the two procedures. Buttock implants are artificial devices made of silicone that are surgically placed in the buttocks to add volume to the area. The Brazilian butt lift is a fat grafting technique in which fat is removed from other areas of the patient’s body, such as the abdomen or flanks, then strategically injected into the butt for a fuller, more defined shape. Buttock implants may be a more appropriate option for thin patients who do not have enough excess fat for a BBL.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION WITH IMPLANTS?

Several incision techniques may be used for buttock augmentation. Your surgeon will recommend the best choice for you after evaluating your circumstances during the consultation process. After the incision is made, a silicone implant is inserted above the gluteal muscles or between the gluteal muscles and positioned appropriately. The incisions are closed with sutures and, if necessary, drains are placed.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING RECOVERY?

After gluteal implant surgery, you may be placed in a support or compression garment and small, thin tubes may be used to drain excess fluid from the treatment area. You will likely experience pain and swelling during the initial healing period; these can be managed with prescribed medications and proper use of your compression garments. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions regarding how to sit and sleep in order to avoid direct contact and excessive pressure on the buttocks. Exercise and heavy lifting must be avoided until you are cleared to resume rigorous physical activity. Most patients return to work two to three weeks after buttock implant placement.

WHAT RESULTS CAN BUTTOCK IMPLANTS ACHIEVE?

The initial results of a buttock augmentation procedure are visible almost immediately, though it will take some time for postoperative swelling to resolve and your final results to emerge. The benefits gluteal implants can achieve include:

  • Increased roundness, fullness, firmness and projection of your buttocks

  • A curvier, more sensuous figure

  • Better proportions for your body frame

  • A fuller contour after weight loss or aging

  • Clothing and swimwear fits better

  • Improved image and self-confidence

The results of buttock augmentation surgery are long-lasting. A healthy diet and exercise regimen should be adopted to help maintain your new shape. Over time, the size and shape of your buttocks can change due to aging and gravity, but you should continue to experience contouring benefits from your procedure.

WHAT PROCEDURES COMPLEMENT BUTTOCK AUGMENTATION?

Patients with significant loose skin as a result of aging or massive weight loss may benefit from undergoing a buttock lift in addition to buttock augmentation. A buttock lift removes excess fat and skin to give the buttocks a more toned appearance, but it cannot add volume to the area. If you are concerned about the size of your buttocks as well as sagging or dimpled skin, combining a buttock lift with buttock implants may yield the best results.

ARE BUTTOCK IMPLANTS RIGHT FOR ME?

Gluteal implants can achieve a fuller, rounder buttock contour that improves the proportions of the entire lower body. You may be a candidate for buttock implants if you are dissatisfied with the shape or projection of your butt, if weight loss or the aging process has made your buttocks flat, if you feel your butt is not proportionate to your body frame, or if you are unhappy with the way clothing fits your figure.
