WHAT HAPPENS DURING NOSE SURGERY?

Rhinoplasty is a highly customized procedure that may be performed using an open or closed technique. The appropriate option for your specific procedure will depend on your concerns, your physical characteristics and your desired outcomes. Nose surgery falls into two primary categories:

Open Rhinoplasty: During open rhinoplasty, an incision is made under the nasal tip across the narrow band of tissue that separates the nostrils. The skin is gently lifted to reveal the underlying bone and cartilage, which can then be reduced, augmented or reshaped as needed to create a more aesthetically pleasing and proportionate structure. The tissues are redraped over the improved framework and the incisions are closed to complete the procedure. Open rhinoplasty offers the surgeon maximum visibility and direct access to the nasal structures, which can make it a more suitable approach for patients desiring extensive transformation.

Closed Rhinoplasty: During closed rhinoplasty, adjustments are performed through incisions made inside the nostrils. This technique eliminates visible scarring and may reduce postoperative swelling and recovery time. However, it may not be effective for patients seeking extensive surgical improvement. Closed rhinoplasty is most commonly recommended for patients who require only moderate adjustments to achieve their aesthetic goals.

Patients who experience impeded airflow as a result of a deviated septum can undergo a procedure called septorhinoplasty that addresses the appearance and the functional capabilities of the nose simultaneously. During septorhinoplasty, the surgeon makes cosmetic improvements and opens obstructed nasal passages by straightening the septum.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING RHINOPLASTY SURGERY?

Splints and packing may be used to provide support for your newly shaped nose and protect it from contact during the first phase of healing. Bruising and swelling will be present during this time and can persist for several weeks. Prescribed medication can help alleviate the discomfort if needed. Most patients are ready to return to work or school one to two weeks after surgery. Strenuous activities, particularly those that put your nose at risk of contact, may need to be avoided longer. While initial swelling will subside within a few weeks, minor swelling may come and go for up to a year following your rhinoplasty. Your new nasal contour may continue to refine gradually over this period. The final results of your surgery will be revealed once the swelling has fully dissipated and the structures of your nose have settled into their improved shape.
